Counting off sandalwood beads on a mala, or rosary, while repeating a sacred prayer, or mantra, aids meditation and progress toward enlightenment in Buddhist philosophy. The 108 beads represent the human passions associated with Chenresig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
